Commencing as soon as possible there is an opening for a
PhD position (m/f/d)
for the topic:
“Growth and investigation of epitaxial LiNb1-xTaxO3 thin films”
The position is part of the DFG research unit FOR5044 „Low-dimensional periodic defect structures in polar oxides“ and includes the growth of epitaxial films of the solid-solution LiNb1-xTaxO3 by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) supported by Machine Learning (ML) algorithms and the fundamental characterization of the thin films.
The applicant is supposed to carry out PLD experiments, target preparation, and standard structural and electrical characterization. The PhD work will provide a comprehensive insight into the various aspects of scientific crystal growth and ML approaches. The work topics are being carried out in close cooperation with the other sub-projects of the DFG research unit and experienced scientists at the IKZ.
Qualifications:
- Applicants must hold a MSc degree or Diploma either in physics, chemistry, materials science, materials engineering or related fields with relevant experience and must have an experimental background.
- Applicants should be able to work in a self-reliant and structured way within a highly motivated team of researchers and technicians and to share the acquired knowledge within the project group and research unit.
- Skills in these fields are welcome: materials science, epitaxy of oxide films, thin film characterization, data analysis (e.g. by Origin, Matlab, Python, Autocad) and ML approaches.
- Good English language skills written and oral.
What we offer:
The position is limited to three years, an extension for another year is possible. Payment is according to TVöD Bund (E13 75%) (Collective agreement for the public sector). The contract includes the usual social benefits (30 vacation days in a 5-day week, flexible working hours).
