The Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung currently offers a 

Post Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d)

position for the topics of

“2D electronics, memory transistors, and chemical vapor deposition”.

This project (funded by the ERC) targets to establish 2D phyllosilicates as a versatile insulator class in 2D electronics, with a focus on memory transistors and reconfigurable hardware. A particular focus of the position would be on the growth of 2D semiconductors on monocrystalline phyllosilicate substrates, mainly via salt-assisted vapor-liquid-solid chemical vapor deposition, as well as establishing a growth route for phyllosilicate thin films. The tasks would also go in the direction of proof-of-principle integration of the grown interfaces and layers into devices as field effect transistors, memory transistors, and more elaborate reconfigurable logic blocks.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of the 2D phyllosilicates as a material class, and with special focus on benchmarking their performance in advanced electronic applications. The candidate will actively work on the development of an ambient/low-vacuum Ar-flow CVD setup, growth protocols, and routes for transfer (on 1 cm2 basis) of the films and interfaces into various device architectures. The candidate will also contribute to the electrical characterization and proof-of-principle device design. The position will expect from the candidate to independently coordinate their work and especially to actively participate in project-specific collaborations with the project partners at TU Wien, Uni BW Munich, Trinity College Dublin, Stanford University, and others.

Requirements:

  • PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or a related field, with a focus on at least one of the fields: 2D semiconductors, 2D electronics, CVD growth of 2D materials, bulk growth of van der Waals crystals.
  • Advantageous: Experience with salt-assisted CVD process for 2D semiconductor growth, 2D flake transfer (PDMS, PC, SiN, Au), FET integration, photolithography, electrical characterization (transfer, stability, hysteretic device behavior, etc).
  • Strong data-analysis skills preferably using Python and/or Matlab.
  • Equipment/infrastructure-wise advantageous: Familiarity with vacuum systems, with tube furnaces, with controller design (python/LabVIEW), clean-room facilities (spin coating, mask aligning, laser writing), AFM/Raman characterization.
  • Experience in drafting and writing scientific manuscripts is required, as well as the track record that reflects this claim (preferably experience in using LaTeX).
  • Self-management and ability to actively and self-driven contribute to the research team, and to coordinate tasks of technicians and students.
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken).

The position is initially a fixed-term position through April 28, 2028. Payment is according to TVöD Bund (E13) (Treaty for German public service) including the usual social benefits (30 vacation days in a 5-day week, flexible working hours).
